Early Career in Radiology

Dr. Xiaoyang Liu, a UMIT abdominal radiologist.

I am Xiaoyang Liu. I have recently joined the Joined Department of Medical Imaging as an Abdominal Radiologist, Assistant Professor and Clinician-investigator.
Becoming a full-time staff member offers a different perspective compared to when you are a trainee. The mentality changes: previously, there was always a second eye looking at your report but when we become independent, we are all on our own — in a way. Your report is final. It goes to the patient directly. It goes to the referring physician directly.
There will be difficultes no matter what clinical practice you choose, but there is no difficulty that cannot be overcome. I am very lucky to have chosen a very supportive group that made this transition very smooth for me.
I share my experience navigating early career in radiology, my challenges, balancing between work and family, and so much more as a guest of our podcast Radiologists. I am also featured, with my black-and-white photos and my voice, in the new episode of UMIT’s Shine a Light series.
